Pre-Service

Here is an excerpt from the NCHE Final Position Paper on TAH related to Pre-Service Teaching

THE PRESSING NEED FOR PRE-SERVICE TEACHER TRAINING IN HISTORY AND FOR ONGOING PROFEESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT INVOLVING BOTH HISTORICAL CONTENT AND HISTORICAL THINKING

  • In 2008, fewer than 1/3 of current history teachers had both majored in history and were certified to teach History at the high school level (as opposed to 71% of English teachers and 64% of Math teachers)
  • Moreover, 1/3 of high school history teachers had not even majored in history. In 2001, 59% of elementary school students and 44% of middle school students were taught by teachers with neither a major nor minor in history in college.
  • All of the major professional organizations in history and history education (AHA, OAH,NCHE, Gilder-Lehrman Institute of American History) have published studies persuasively arguing that this lack of background in history means that teachers are not prepared to teach American history to the nation’s students.
