2011 AP Grant Money

posted Sep 22, 2011 2:42 AM by Greg Oppel

E-Mail from OSDE AP Director Cathy Seward
I have attached the applications for the 2011-12 AP Grant competition. Instructions for completing the applications can be found on the first
page.  There will be $1,042,700 available for this competition. Applications must be postmarked by Thursday, December 15, 2011 for
consideration in this competition.

A videoconference,  AP Grant Writing Workshop, will be held on Monday, October 24 from 1:30 to 3:30.  It will be repeated on Tuesday, October
25th from 1:30 to 3:30 and again on Thursday, October 27th from 1:30 to 3:30.  You can register for the videoconference by going to this site:
http://sde.state.ok.us/Services/Videoconference/register.html.  Click on the link to the location where you wish to attend, then choose the session
that best fits your schedule.  (The AP Grant Writing Workshop is right above the blue banner that says "Title I Schoolwide Planning."  At least
it is right now!  It may move as other videoconferences are scheduled.) Please bring a copy of the application to the videoconference.  While the
videoconference is scheduled to go for 2 hours, it may not take that long. It all depends on the questions and discussion that goes on during the
workshop.

A change from last year - preference points will NOT be assigned for attending the videoconference.

I always strive for error-free applications, but I have never been successful so please accept my apologies in advance for any errors.  If
you find an error (or even two!), please let me know so I can make that correction and re-send them.  Once they have been processed by our web
staff, they will also be posted here:
http://sde.state.ok.us/Curriculum/AP/Grants.html.  You can also get some basic information about the grants and see past winners.

The documents are compatible with Word 93 and 2003 so I hope you are able to open them.  If you aren't, please let me know.

You can add pages to the application as needed.

If you are unsure whether or not your school has received a specific grant, please let me know.  I can find out and get back with you.

Please distribute this to anyone you think might be interested.

I am here most days from 8 to 4:30 so feel free to call or email me with questions, concerns or comments.  (Unfortunately, I will be out of the
office tomorrow attending the Teacher of the Year program at the State Fair of Oklahoma.  No, I won't be walking around the fair - drat! - I'll
be in the Transportation Building working.  You can still email or call and leave a message for me.)

Good luck!

Teaching Inquiry Through Primary Sources

posted Nov 7, 2010 8:00 AM by Greg Oppel

Check out the Teaching with Primary Sources website from the Library of Congress
  • I have seen this Stripling Model of Inquiry before but looking at an article that lays it out is helpful.
    • Reflect on your classroom planning and practice in light of the goals of our primary source work.
    • How often do we just "do" documents without a goal in mind or a strategy in place to reach our goal?
    • The site reminds us why the process of inquiry is important for students separate from the historical value of the document itself.

Create beautiful word clouds with Wordle!

Wordle was brought to our attention by Sharon Leon (Center for History and New Media) of George Mason University at the 2009 NCHE Conference in Boston.  Try it out and let us know what you think.

You can make comments here but it may be more fruitful to post comments on Clio's Scroll so we can interact properly.  The comments here won't let us do that as well.  Help us figure out the best way to announce helpful ideas and discuss them in our blog.
Sincerely,
Clio ;)
